HAMMOCKS ALSO HEAL

A public hospital in Campeche offers its patients the option of resting in hammocks

The practice of medical anthropology seeks to adapt to the customs of the rural population, mostly of Mayan ethnicity

"The people of the Yucatan peninsula are born, grow, reproduce and die in a hammock", says Dr. Roberto Campos Navarro, a surgeon with postgraduate studies in Social Anthropology. He started, more than 20 years ago, a project of hospital hammocks that has now been resumed in Campeche. The delegation of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in that State announced on June 22 that it was resuming this "practice of medical anthropology" in the rural hospital of Hecelchakán, a community 72 kilometers from the capital of Campeche.
