The Curagua hammock was awarded the "Seal of Excellence for Handicrafts" by UNESCO in 2011. A deserved recognition of its quality and authenticity, as well as its environmental responsibility. The hammock of Curagua is a little known hammock although it is one of the most spectacular hammocks in the world of hammocks. They are woven by the Venezuelan artisans, especially in the state of Monegas. They use a natural fiber from Curagua, a plant from the bromeliads family. It is a very fine fiber and, after the treatment they give it, it is white. The fiber they apply to their tissues comes from the dried branches of the plant. The preparation of the thread is a long and laborious process: the fiber is extracted (escabece) manually from the leaf, washed with soap to clean it and left to dry in the sun. Then the fibers of about 100mm are rolled with the hand and the leg (the yarn) to turn them into a long thread. Finally they twist in thread in different thicknesses, a fine thread for the body and fringes and a thicker thread for the cabuyera, the strings at the ends. The process of preparing the yarn can take up to a week for a single hammock. Once the yarn is finished, the warp is mounted on a vertical loom, a simple wooden or metallic frame. The plot is tied with a cotton thread (pale thread). The cotton gives a softer touch to the hammock. The artisans apply an infinity of drawings or pictures such as the spider, half orange, calao, flower box, etc. Depending on the size and complexity of the pattern they apply, weaving a hammock can last up to seven months. A specialized work that requires patience, dedication and a lot of art. The result is a beautiful hammock, authentic and exclusive, resistant and comfortable, 100% handmade and unique in the world. These hammocks are a good investment in every way. It is a connection of the ancestral history of weaving with natural materials with the well-being and relaxation that we all seek. We contribute to the family economy of these amazing artisans and help keep the beautiful art of weaving alive with natural fibers. We also enrich our own lives that provide these exceptional hammocks and chinchorros.
